This study was undertaken to comprehensively assess the status of microenterprise lending by the MFIs in India. This had the following components
- Assessment of demand supply gap in financing of microenterprises. This was primarily based on the review of secondary data.
- Experience of Microenterprise lending by the MFIs in India: We profiled case studies of eleven MFIs across India to document their experiences in microenterprise lending. On the basis of these case studies we identified common factors, lessons learnt and challenges for microenterprise lending by the MFIs.
- Financing of MFI’s portfolio by the Banks: We interviewed senior management staff in many banks to understand their perspective on microenterprise lending.
- Suggestion on the way forward: On the basis of discussions with the MFIs, banks and experts in the microfinance and microenterprise domain, we provided suggestions to scale up microenterprise lending by the MFIs.
